JEFF LINDBERG'S CHICAGO JAZZ ORCHESTRA
_______________________________________________________
When Jeff Lindberg and the late trumpeter Steve Jensen created the
Jazz Members Big Band in 1978, they never dreamed that their
ensemble would grow from a North-side rehearsal band into a world-
class jazz orchestra. Now renamed the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, this
group enters its 33rd year with a résume ́ that ranks them with the
greatest of artistic institutions in Chicago.
The CJO, Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous
operation, has performed 23 straight years at The Kennedy Center
Honors, and its twelve-year concert series is the longest-running jazz
orchestra concert series in Chicago. The group has also toured Italy,
Spain, Sweden, and Denmark. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra is a
genuine American success story. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra grew
out of the streets of Chicago to become one of the world’s best
professional jazz orchestras, highly regarded by the finest musicians in
the field.
The CJO’s compact disc, Clark Terry and Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz
Orchestra: George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (Americana Music,
2004),has received widespread critical acclaim, including a
nomination as “Jazz Album of The Year” by the Jazz Journalist’s
Association, and a rare “Five Star” rating by Down Beat magazine,
which also named it one of the top recordings of the previous decade.
In addition, it also made the annual “top CDs” lists of Jazz at Lincoln
Center, Jazz Times, and Jazz Education Journal.
For more than 30 years, the CJOA has been at the forefront of
presenting performances of classic American jazz orchestra repertoire
to diverse Illinois audiences through reasonably priced programs held
at a variety of venues. Always looking for new challenges – both in
repertoire and stylistic choices – Artistic Director Jeff Lindberg has
infused the Orchestra with a spirit of versatility that has made the group
a favorite performer not only in jazz venues, but also in concert settings,
receptions, and dances – just about anywhere that exceptional big
band music can be presented. Audiences have the opportunity to hear
unique musical arrangements transcribed by the CJO, and because
the Orchestra will have its own transcriptions of the original recordings,
much of the music presented in these concerts cannot be heard
anywhere else.
